About Us

The Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art, formed in 2014 in memory of local arts patron Mary Dixon Montague, is a coalition of community leaders who are passionate about making art available to all, free, and a part of everyday life. Comprised of artists, business people, tourism officials, and arts advocates, our advisory board includes representatives from the Hattiesburg Arts Council, Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association, city government, and the art departments at University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University. Our mission is to purchase and place art in the heart of town—our parks, neighborhoods, public buildings, and businesses—and to raise awareness of the works of art already in the area.  Co-founded by Becky Montague, Larry Albert, and Rick Taylor, HAPA is affiliated with the Hattiesburg Tourism Commission, a non-profit entity, and administered by an all-volunteer staff. Contributions are tax-deductible, with 100% of funds applied directly to promoting public art in our community.   Initial projects, which were funded by a gift in the late Mrs. Montague’s memory, included an inaugural annual outdoor sculpture competition and exhibition, a Little Free Librarycollaboration with the Hattiesburg Arts Council, and the purchase of a large sculpture for Town Square Park. Since then, we've commissioned and installed a sculpture by local artist Jennifer Torres and held two more annual sculpture competitions.

We believe in the power of art to vitalize a community for residents and visitors alike, in ways farther-reaching than aesthetics. Public art can enrich our imaginations; beautify our spaces for work, contemplation, and play; and inspire self-discovery, community engagement, and dialogue.

There are numerous ways!

Dedicate a memorial sculpture

We offer a limited number of opportunities for family and friends to memorialize a loved one who appreciated the arts. Your contribution of $10,000 or more will be complemented with a HAPA contribution to ensure a beautiful and lasting tribute. We’ll help you find the perfect work of art and prominent placement for it. For more information, call Becky at 601.466.3371.

Sponsor a Work of Art
Promote your business and the arts by sponsoring one of our rotating sculptures. Your $500 contribution ensures prominent placement of your business name and/or logo on the sculpture’s marker.
